Honorees

Rogene Gee Calvert
A native Houstonian of Chinese descent, Rogene Gee Calvert has dedicated much of her life’s work to serving the Asian-American community. She is founding president of the Houston 80-20 Asian American Political Action Committee, a group that mobilizes Asian-Americans to participate in the political process through voter education and bloc voting. She is also co-founder and current president of the Asian American Health Coalition/HOPE Clinic. Other notable accomplishments are being co-founder and past president of the Asian American Family Services, past president of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) -Greater Houston Chapter and the first executive director for the Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association. For over three decades, Rogene has worked in paid or voluntary positions with numerous nonprofit organizations, such as the United Way. She currently serves in Mayor White’s administration as director of Personnel and Volunteer Initiatives Program.

Glen Gondo
Glen Gondo has made many significant contributions toward the betterment of our city through his dedication and commitment to our community. Glen devotes his time as a volunteer for many nonprofit organizations, and has received numerous awards for his charitable work. He serves as a board member of the United Way, Japan America Society, Asia Society, and Alley Theater, He also serves on the board of the Greater Houston Partnership, Greater Houston Convention Visitors Bureau, and World Trade Organization, and was recently elected to chairman of the Mayor's International Affairs & Development Council. Glen is founder of the annual Japan Festival in Houston, and served as president of the Asian American Coalition. He is president and owner of Zushi, Inc., Gondo Consulting and Tokyo Gardens Catering. Glen is also president and owner of Gondo Company, Inc. which handles the Japanese food for Continental Airlines from Houston to Narita, Japan.
